Concerns over delayed justice
Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has expressed concerns over delay in the delivery of justice and compensation to the parents of Shiva Shankhar DasAsian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has expressed concerns over delay in the delivery of justice and compensation to the parents of Shiva Shankhar Das, a Dalit man who was poisoned to death for having an affair with a woman from the so-called upper caste two years ago.
The rights organisation has also blamed police for not providing security to the victim’s family, who have been receiving threatening messages to back down from the case.
Issuing a press statement on Wednesday, AHRC said that the government has not lived up to its commitment.
Baburam Bhattarai, the former prime minister, had promised to bring the perpetrators behind the incident to the book and provide compensation to the victim’s family.
Twenty one year old Shiva Shankhar, a native from Pansera VDC of Siraha, was poisoned by the relatives of the non-Dalit woman that he was involved with.
The police had allegedly taken the side of the perpetrators and tried to suppress the case at the beginning by refusing to register the case lodged by the victim’s family.
They had also forced Shiva Shankhar’s father to put his fingerprints on a report that denied him to see the content of the document and his son’s death certificate.
The report on the case was registered on February 2012 without any progress in the investigation.
The police had reportedly threatened Shiva Shankhar’s father when he tried to inquire about the case.
Despite meeting with different Dalit NGOs, government bodies, the prime minister and the home minister, the victim’s family has not receive any help or compensation so far.
